Cleaning and Disinfecting Your Home During COVID-19

12/10/2020

Wear gloves (disposable or reusable) for routine cleaning and disinfection
Clean surfaces using soap and water, then use disinfectant
Read owner's manual for instructions on how to clean your items
Wash your hands often with soap and water for 20 seconds
If possible, have anyone who is sick use a seperate bathroom

Key times to clean hands
  • Immediately after removing gloves and after contact with a person who is sick.
  • After blowing one’s nose, coughing, or sneezing
  • After using the restroom
  • Before eating or preparing food
  • After contact with animals or pets
  • Before and after providing routine care for another person who needs assistance (e.g. a child)

Routinely clean frequently touched surfaces, such as tables, doorknobs, light switches, countertops, handles, desks, phones, keyboards, toilets, faucets, and sinks. Also, vacuum your floors and carpets.

Wearing gloves outside of certain instances (touching shopping cart, using ATM, etc.) will not always prevent you from getting COVID-19 and may still allow the spread of germs. It is still important to regularly wash (20 seconds with soap and water) and sanitize your hands (use sanitizer with at least 60% alcohol).

Clean electronics with wipes (at least 70% alcohol) and dry surface thoroughly, or follow the manufacturer's instruction. Also consider putting a wipeable cover on your electronics.

For clothing, towels, linens and other items:
  • Launder items according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Use the warmest appropriate water setting and dry items completely.
  • Wear disposable gloves when handling dirty laundry from a person who is sick.
  • Dirty laundry from a person who is sick can be washed with other people’s items.
  • Do not shake dirty laundry.
  • Clean and disinfect clothes hampers according to guidance above for surfaces.
  • Remove gloves, and wash hands right away.
